Victoria is a viticultural paradise from the spectacular beaches to the rolling hills and high country.
Unlike other States where viticulture is concentrated to the coastal regions or adjacent ranges, the whole of Victoria is suited to grape growing with rich soils and temperate climate. In broad terms, there are four distinct climatic regions. In the north, west and central north are the Riverlands along the meanderings of the River Murray stretching from Mildura to Swan Hill. From this region comes a huge proportion of the national crush. From around Rutherglen in the north east comes Australia's incomparable fortified dessert wines of Muscat and Tokay. Glorious reds are also a feature of this region. Central Victoria produces excellent red wines with a focus on Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon while the highlands in the north and south provide very good white wines. The cooler regions from Drumborg in the south west to East Gippsland is the home of outstanding Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Around 300 wineries operate in Victoria with more opening each week presenting beautiful wine and tourism opportunities relatively close to the capital city of Melbourne. |
