Tasmania
Green Green!
Grapes have been grown in Tasmania for longer than in any other state of Australia, except New South Wales.

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the most widely grown varieties for sparkling and table wine, closely followed by Riesling and the Cabernet family.

Despite its colder climate, the industry continues to flourish on this picturesque island. Today Tasmania presents a luring mix of small and medium sized wineries, some producing wines of such richness and depth that they are attracting cult status here and abroad.

Quality not quantity describes the industry in the island state, where vines must endure temperamental wines, rain and frost before their fruit ripens slowly in the long, still autumn.

This gives the grapes an especially delicate flavour and a high natural acidity which cleanses the palate, making Tasmanian wines particularly good with food.

Tasmania's premier wine is Pinot Noir closely followed by Chardonnay, Riesling and members of the Cabernet family. There are eager young contenders in the Tasmanian industry and they are increasingly making their presence felt in national wine shows with sparkling and still wines. Tasmanian grapes are eagerly sought after by mainland wineries, but the best ripened grapes stay on the island for use in still wines.

Little wonder that more and more wine connoisseurs are visiting the classic boutique wineries on this picturesque island.
