Vines arrived in South Australia with the first settlers in 1836 and areas like the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Langhorne Creek and McLaren Vale were all established by the middle of last century.
Between 1881 and 1890, two vastly different regions were established with the advent of irrigation along the River Murray - Australia's greatest river - and the Coonawarra in the State's South East. The Riverland provides more than 50 percent of the State's crush. In more recent years there has been tremendous growth and expansion in the South East, particularly around Padthaway, Robe, Mount Benson and Bowdertown. The Barossa Valley is the most renowned showpiece of South Australia's wine industry, and arguably the industry nationally It is the ancestral home of Australia's greatest red wine, Penfolds Grange, made from Shiraz. What the Barossa is to Shiraz, Coonawarra is to Cabernet Sauvignon. Some excellent white wines are also produced in the cooler South East region. The Clare Valley produces among its vast array of Australia's finest Riesling. McLaren Vale has long enjoyed its reputation for hearty Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre, but it also produces high quality Cabernet Sauvignon as well as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. From the Adelaide Hills comes wonderful Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and sparkling wines, along with a growing reputation for Pinot Noir, while Rowlands Flat north of Adelaide is known around the world as the home of Jacobs Creek. |
